Mayor - Michael Key
Michael E. Key began his current term in 2020, previously serving on the council in the 1980s, 1990s, and 2010 through 2020. A Marine Corps Veteran, serving in Vietnam, Mike asks the tough questions, works hard, and gets the job done. His passion for serving others extends to his service as a Charter Member of the N.E. Marine Corps League Detachment 1404 and his membership as Second Baptist Church in Fort Payne, Alabama. He and his wife Eiko, whom he married in 1972, have lived in Valley Head since 1978. They have two sons who went to school here, also they are grandparents to three wonderful Grands. He is now retired and able to commit much of his time into town business, serving people in Valley Head. He likes to see his town grow and prosper and he is committed to exploring ways to accomplish them.
Councilwoman and Mayor Pro Tem - Adele L. Phillips
Adele L. Phillips, a resident of Valley Head since 1963 is currently serving her third term on the city council. She has been married to Jimmy Phillips since 1969. They have two daughters and a son, along with ten grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. Jimmy and Adele are members of Lea's Chapel Baptist Church. Since retiring from V.I. Prewett and Son's Mill in Fort Payne, Alabama in 2009, Adele has gone above and beyond to help with town events and projects to help families in need. Anyone who knows Adele is aware of her true servant's heart.
Councilwoman - Karen Vest
Karen A. Vest is serving her first term on City Council. She and her husband Charley moved to Valley Head in 2016. They have 5 children and 7 beautiful grandchildren. Karen was born in Dayton, Ohio, but has called Alabama home for over 26 years. She has volunteered and served as president to various organizations over the years such as Kiwanis, The American Red Cross, The American Heart Association, numerous garden clubs and art associations. Karen graduated from college with honors with a business degree and has been a paralegal for over 25 years. She still performs contract paralegal services for several law firms in Birmingham, AL. She loves to garden, run in 5k races, spend precious time with her grandchildren, and take care of all the animals on their farm.
Councilman - Jack Martin
Jack H. Martin moved to Valley Head in 1991 and loves this little town. This is now the third year of serving as a councilman in the Town of Valley Head. He has been married to Susan Lowrey Martin for 16 years. He is a retired electrician who worked at Revere Copper & Brass in Scottsboro and US Pipe in Chattanooga. His desires as a councilman include helping to make Valley Head a better Community to live in.
Councilman - Dean Freeman
Councilman - Chris Busby
Christopher B. Busby has lived in Valley Head for most of his life. His father and mother are Kenneth and Carol Busby. He graduated from Valley Head High School in 2002 then joined the U.S. Army in the same year. He was deployed to Iraq in 2003 where he was injured by a mortar attack and received the purple heart award for wounds sustained in combat. He was medically retired from the Army in 2005. He has been married to his wife, Alisha Busby since 2006 and they have two children, Hunter Robertson and Braden Busby. This is his first term as councilman and he is eager to serve the people of this community.
Town Clerk - Debra Rhodes
Debra Rhodes, a life-long resident of Valley Head has served as clerk since 2008. She is a graduate of Valley Head High School and is married to Steve Rhodes with two children. Debra always goes above and beyond the normal duties of a clerk, serving on numerous boards. Everyone who comes into town hall will always find a smile and cheerful hello.
Police Chief - Jimmy L Phillips
Police Chief Jimmy L. Phillips graduated from Valley Head School in 1967. Married to Adele Bell Phillips and have three children. He served in US Navy from 1968-1971. He is retired from Dekalb County Sheriff's Department serving 27 years as an investigator. He has 43 years of experience in law enforcement. He was hired as Chief of Police in Valley Head on December 4, 2018, and is now a Certified Chief and Certified Law Enforcement Executive by the state of Alabama, as of August 1, 2019. He is proud to serve as Chief of Police of Valley Head where he lives and loves. He is dedicated to being the best for his Town and Community.
For over sixty-four years, the Valley Head Fire Department has been providing fire protection, emergency rescue, and public service to the citizens, businesses, and tourists in the Valley Head and surrounding areas. We are constantly striving to ensure that our volunteer personnel, our training, and our equipment will meet any challenge we face. In addition to our traditional jobs of fire suppression, in the last few years, we have worked to provide vehicle extraction (Jaws of Life, Hurst tools, and other rescue equipment technique), thermal imaging, first responder emergency services, and answer/respond to disaster situations. We take pride in maintaining the level of service that we offer to Valley Head and the surrounding areas.
Fire Chief - Dustin Burt
Valley Head Fire Chief Dustin Burt is a lifelong Valley Head resident. He graduated from Valley Head High School in 2004. Dustin worked for the DeKalb County Ambulance Service for 8 years as an EMT and later an advanced EMT. He then transferred to the Marshall County EMS. Dustin has been in the Volunteer Fire Department for 14 years. Dustin was appointed as fire chief in Valley Head for the second time in 2018.
